UAE Energy Strategy 2050

Sharjah, UAE — April 9, 2026 — The Sharjah Waste to Energy Facility has processed 1,000,000 tons of waste since inauguration, marking a major operational milestone in Sharjah’s zero–waste to landfill journey while contributing to the UAE’s progressive energy strategy towards net-zero emissions. As the plant advances into its highly anticipated Phase 2 expansion, it continues to generate 30 MW of low-carbon electricity for the Sharjah public grid while offsetting 450,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually through landfill diversion. Established in 2022 as a flagship project of the Emirates Waste to Energy Company, a joint venture between BEEAH and Tadweer Group, the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant is the region’s first commercial-scale facility of its kind. As part of Sharjah’s broader circular ecosystem, it has played a transformative role in achieving the emirate’s 93% landfill diversion rate, complementing the integrated recycling operations at BEEAH’s state-of-the-art facilities within the Waste Management Complex in Al Saja’a.

From processing 100,000 tons of waste in its inaugural year to achieving its latest milestone, the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant has diverted enough waste from landfill equivalent to the combined weight of two Burj Khalifas. Upon Phase 2 completion, the Sharjah Waste to Energy project will double its positive impact through a second, duplicate plant adjoining the existing facility. The expanded plant will deliver significant increases:

  • Power output: from 30 MW to 60 MW
  • Annual waste processing: from 300,000 tons to 600,000 tons
  • CO₂ displacement: from 450,000 tons to nearly 1 million tons
  • Homes powered: from 28,000 to approximately 60,000 households

This enhanced capacity will be supported by continued collaboration with the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) to enable efficient integration into the public grid and further contribute to the UAE’s rapidly expanding clean energy portfolio.

Waste-to-energy is one of the major alternative pathways in the UAE’s energy diversification strategy, which has proactively laid the foundation since 2017 for tripling the share of national renewable energy. Clean energy produced from waste sustainably meets growing power demand while advancing the country’s ambitions for reaching net zero by 2050. The Sharjah Waste to Energy plant is a key contributor to this strategy, alongside landmark renewable and nuclear energy projects such as the Dubai Waste-to-Energy Plant, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, and the Barakah Nuclear Energy plant.

Commenting on the milestone, Hamza Al Jefri, CEO of the Emirates Waste to Energy Company, said: “Reaching the 1,000,000-ton milestone demonstrates the feasibility of our waste-to-energy model in addressing landfill dependency and clean energy needs. With Phase 2, we are focused on scaling our impact even further, expanding clean output while continuing to provide an effective solution for hard-to-recycle waste. The Emirates Waste to Energy Company remains committed to supporting national and local sustainability goals through energy innovation and operational excellence.”

By transforming residual waste into clean energy, the facility directly tackles the UAE’s high per capita municipal solid waste generation, a rising cost the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) is working to eliminate through initiatives that promote waste as an economic resource.

Fahad Shehail, CEO of Environment at BEEAH, added: “Through the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, BEEAH continues to deliver innovative solutions that are enabling near-total landfill diversion in Sharjah. The latest achievement is a testament to the vision of our leadership and the strength of our partnerships. Phase 2 will significantly expand our positive impact, supporting the UAE’s transition to a cleaner, more circular economy and creating long-term environmental value for the region’s future-ready cities.”

The Sharjah Waste to Energy plant is located adjacent to BEEAH’s Waste Management Complex, which houses 12 integrated waste processing facilities, including one of the world’s largest Material Recovery Facilities. Collectively, the facilities process different types of municipal and commercial waste to recover recyclables for reintroduction into the circular economy and produce alternative materials and fuels. The residual, hard-to-recycle waste is sent to the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, where it is thermally treated. The resultant heat is applied to a boiler, producing high-pressure steam to run a turbine generator. The plant produces low-carbon electricity, while treating flue gas and bottom ash, in line with best available European Union techniques. The residual heat is recovered, and the steam is condensed to be recycled, forming a closed-loop, efficient waste-to-energy process.

In 2025, Tadweer Group acquired Masdar’s stake in the Sharjah Waste to Energy Facility, becoming a joint venture partner to BEEAH. Building on the successes of the Sharjah plant and its subsequent expansion, the Emirates Waste to Energy Company aims to develop more clean energy projects across the UAE and the wider region to advance a sustainable, low-carbon future.

Renewables Account for 85.6% of New Global Power Capacity in 2025, IRENA Says https://ecomirrors.com/2026/04/01/renewables-account-for-85-6-of-new-global-power-capacity-in-2025-irena-says/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 09:53:13 +0000 https://ecomirrors.com/?p=425 2025 marks another record for installed global capacity, signaling countries to strengthen energy security with domestic renewable sources

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 1 April 2026 – 2025 saw total renewable power capacity reach 5 149 gigawatts (GW) after the addition of 692 GW, or a 15.5% of annual increase, according to new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The Renewable Capacity Statistics 2026 also finds renewable energy dominates the total capacity expansion at 85.6% share, while non-renewables continue to account for a smaller share of additions.

Geopolitical tensions are once again thrusting energy into the global spotlight. Escalation in the Middle East raises fresh concerns over supply security and fossil fuel price volatility. Against this backdrop, renewable energy is gaining attention to build more resilient systems that are less vulnerable to international shocks. As renewables are homegrown, low-cost and can be deployed immediately, increasing their share in national energy systems can reduce exposure to international fuel markets.

Commenting on the findings, IRENA Director-General, Francesco La Camera said, “In the midst of uncertain time, renewable energy remains consistent and steadfast in its expansion. This not only indicates market preference but also makes a strong case for renewable energy resilience with brutal clarity. A more decentralised energy system, with a growing share of renewables and more market players, is structurally more resilient. Countries that invested in the energy transition are weathering this crisis with less economic damage, as they boost energy security, resilience and competitiveness.”

In line with the previous year, solar energy led the increase, accounting for 511 GW or approximately 75% share in the total renewables capacity addition. Wind energy followed suit, adding 159 GW. Together, solar and wind accounted for 96.8% of all net renewable additions last year, reflecting the biggest cost decrease among all renewable technologies. Bioenergy took the third place with 2.3% annual growth, adding 3.4 GW to total renewable energy expansion.

The report also confirms, however, the persistent and significant disparities amongst countries and regions. Asia continued to lead with a 74.2% contribution to all new renewable capacity; the 513.3 GW additions represent a growth rate of 21.6%. Africa recorded its highest capacity increase, rising by 15.9% or adding 11.3 GW, driven by Ethiopia, South Africa, and Egypt. Another region that experienced its largest annual growth is the Middle East, which increased by 28.9%, led by Saudi Arabia.

In terms of total global capacity, Asia unsurprisingly keeps its top position with 2 891 GW of total renewables capacity, followed by Europe which recorded 934 GW in total. Central America and the Caribbean had the lowest renewables capacity with a total of 21 GW in 2025. This disparity exposes the vulnerability of economies with low share of renewables, and underscores the urgent need to increase the share for their energy security.

    Technology highlights:

    • Solar energy: solar photovoltaics accounted for 510.3 GW out of 511.2 GW of total solar power additions in 2025.
    • Renewable hydropower (excluding pumped hydro): 18.4 GW was added in 2025, with 96% of the increase coming from China. Ethiopia, India, Tanzania, Bhutan, Viet Nam, Canada, Austria, Indonesia and Nepal, respectively added more than 0.5 GW.
    • Wind energy: capacity grew by 14% from 2024, with record additions of 158.7 GW in 2025. China accounted for nearly three-quarters of the expansion, adding 119.4 GW, while India saw an increase of 6.3 GW.
    • Bioenergy: capacity increased by 3.4 GW, led by Japan, which more than doubled its bioenergy capacity expansion from 2024, adding 1.1 GW in 2025. China followed with capacity additions of 0.8 GW and Brazil with 0.6 GW additions.
    • Geothermal energy: capacity grew at a similar rate to the previous year at 1.7%, adding 0.3 GW in 2025. The Philippines and Indonesia each contributed 0.1 GW of the additions, followed by Germany, Türkiye and Japan.
    • Off-grid electricity (excluding Eurasia, Europe and North America): expanded by 1.7 GW, led by solar power with 1.5 GW. A broad range of bioenergy types added 0.2 GW to the total addition of off-grid capacity.

Renewable Energy Investment Accelerates in the Middle East Amid Focus on Energy Security and Infrastructure https://ecomirrors.com/2026/03/30/renewable-energy-investment-accelerates-in-the-middle-east-amid-focus-on-energy-security-and-infrastructure/ Mon, 30 Mar 2026 07:47:52 +0000 https://ecomirrors.com/?p=422 New research finds EMEA Renewable Energy Infrastructure Investment Surges, Procurement Pressures Intensify Globally

UAE – March 30, 2026: – Investment in renewable energy projects in the Middle East has jumped by 28%, year-on-year, according to a new report from Ansarada, a leading M&A and infrastructure procurement platform.

The 2026 Renewable Energy Infrastructure Outlook Report, produced in partnership with Infralogic, notes that globally, investment in the renewable energy sector has surged to a total of US$496B, with increasing AI compute demand cited as a key driver of this activity.

Investment in renewable energy projects in the Middle East totalled US$12.9 billion in 2025, up from US$10.1 billion in 2024.

Surveying 150 senior executives across APAC, EMEA, and the Americas, the report highlights how the Middle East is establishing itself as a strategic market, with 25% of respondents citing the region as a top growth market for renewable energy investment.

As Western markets grapple with grid congestion and permitting delays, the region’s sovereign-backed model enables “rapid supply chain mobilisation and bankable pipelines,” sidestepping the permitting friction and multi-year grid queue bottlenecks plaguing Europe and North America.

The Middle East’s integrated delivery approach exemplifies a different path to market, building renewables and transmission infrastructure in parallel rather than sequentially. This model leverages sovereign capital and streamlined regulatory frameworks to accelerate deployment at scale.

“The Middle East demonstrates what’s possible when projects are designed and delivered holistically,” said Justin Smith, Managing Director at Ansarada. “Building renewables and transmission together represents a fundamentally different approach than the fragmented delivery model common in Western markets.”

The urgency is amplified by AI-driven energy requirements. With over US$500 billion in AI infrastructure capital expenditure projected for 2026 and US data centre energy consumption forecast to hit 409 TWh by 2030, the report identifies this as the primary catalyst for new renewable development, cited by 37% of respondents globally and 36% in EMEA.

The UAE’s emergence as a regional AI hub is driving increased focus on energy infrastructure capable of supporting compute-intensive operations. As the country positions itself at the forefront of AI adoption across the Middle East, the need for integrated renewable energy and storage solutions becomes increasingly critical. “AI compute demand is the single biggest driver of new renewables development,” Smith said. “But the shift from distributed solar to integrated, dispatchable systems, the ‘solar-plus-storage’ configurations needed to manage grid stability, dramatically increases procurement complexity.”

The report reveals battery storage transitioning to essential infrastructure: 34% of EMEA respondents expect strong growth in large-scale storage. In EMEA broadly, macroeconomic uncertainties (44%) and high interest rates (44%) lead to regional concerns.

Despite widespread technology adoption, the report exposes critical weaknesses. While 91% use purpose-built procurement software, organisations deploy an average of 3-4 disconnected systems, and 55% still rely on email for sensitive bidder correspondence.

“Organisations think they’ve digitised, but they’ve actually created a ‘Frankenstack’ of disconnected tools,” Smith said. “The technology fragmentation gap was one of the most surprising findings.”

Only 37% of respondents globally described their most recent procurement process as “very efficient,” dropping to 8% in EMEA and 29% among government agencies. While 95% believe their processes are transparent internally, 43% admit processes lack clarity for external parties, creating litigation risk.

In EMEA, 80% of respondents deeply embed ESG in procurement, with 90% describing transparency and auditability as at least “very important.” Without auditable ESG data, projects may not be eligible for tender or financing in many jurisdictions.”The Middle East demonstrates what’s possible when projects are designed holistically. That integrated approach, combined with proper digital infrastructure for procurement, separates projects that deliver from those that stall,” Smith concluded.

Deep Space Energy Closes Pre-Seed Round, Securing €930K to Generate Electricity on the Moon and Strengthen Satellite Infrastructure https://ecomirrors.com/2026/02/11/deep-space-energy-closes-pre-seed-round-securing-e930k-to-generate-electricity-on-the-moon-and-strengthen-satellite-infrastructure/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 19:00:12 +0000 https://ecomirrors.com/?p=397

With support from private investors, ESA, NATO DIANA, and the Latvian government, the startup will develop its dual-use energy technology powered by radioisotopes, supporting both sustainable power generation for lunar missions and enhanced resilience for strategic satellite infrastructure in Europe.

February 11, 2026. Latvian startup Deep Space Energy has closed its pre-seed round by raising €350K, led by Outlast Fund and Linas Sargautis, an angel investor and a former co-founder of NanoAvionics. The company also secured additional €580K in public contracts and grants by the European Space Agency (ESA), NATO DIANA, and the Latvian government. The funding will primarily be used to further develop a novel radioisotopic generator toward commercialisation, in a bid to strengthen the European sovereign space and defence industry and power Moon surface exploration.

Deep Space Energy is developing a power generator technology that is based on radioisotopes, materials derived from nuclear waste, which generate heat through natural decay. According to Mihails Ščepanskis, founder and CEO of the company, their solution converts that heat into electric power, requiring 5 times less radioisotope fuel than a thermo-electric generator (RTG), currently used in space.

“Our technology, which has already been validated in the laboratory, has several applications across the defence and space sectors. First, we’re developing an auxiliary energy source to enhance the resilience of strategic satellites. It provides the redundancy of satellite power systems by supplying backup power that does not depend on solar energy, making it crucial for high-value military reconnaissance assets,” Ščepanskis says.

The company highlighted that its radioisotope-based energy generator is not designed for any kind of weapons. It will target high-value, dual-use satellites to increase their resilience and operational reliability. The primary focus is on satellites operating in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO) and Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO), which are all critical for modern military reconnaissance and early-warning systems.

These satellites support a range of defence functions, from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites for detecting troop concentrations through clouds and foliage, to signal intelligence for intercepting communications and radio transmissions, as well as missile-launch detection, which is essential for anti-missile defence systems.

Ščepanskis says that the ongoing war in Ukraine clearly demonstrated the decisive role of satellite-based reconnaissance data for modern warfare.  In 2025, Ukraine lost its beachhead in Russian Kursk Oblast at a time when the US temporarily terminated the sharing of satellite intelligence. This fact highlights the strategic importance of satellite-based reconnaissance data and also indicates the strategic vulnerability of Europe, which largely relies on the US defence space assets, especially for high-value GEO satellites.

“As Europe is trying to become more independent, it is imperative to produce satellites with advanced capabilities on our own. Our technology provides an auxiliary energy source for satellites, which makes them more resilient to non-kinetic attacks and malfunctions,” he adds.

In the long term, the company aims to focus on the Moon economy. The radioisotope power generator will address critical energy challenges in the next phase of lunar exploration, including NASA and ESA’s Artemis, Argonaut and lunar rover programmes, as well as the Moon Village framework. In particular, the technology is designed to support lunar night survival and operations in permanently shadowed regions, enabling extended scouting and prospecting missions.

On the Moon, where the temperatures at night drop below 150 degrees Celsius, and nights last for roughly 354 hours, moonrovers can’t rely on solar power.

The company’s technology requires approximately 2kg of Americium-241 fuel to generate 50W of power for a lunar rover, compared with around 10kg of radioisotope material needed by legacy RTG systems for comparable output. Given current projections that Americium-241 production capacity will reach around 10kg per year by the mid-2030s, this efficiency could enable lunar exploration missions to begin more than five years earlier and at up to five times the mission volume.

As a result, commercial lunar activities and resource utilisation could emerge significantly sooner than previously expected.

According to Ščepanskis, the company’s technology can significantly enhance the economics of moon rover missions by enabling them to last multiple day-night cycles up to a few years. The sole expenses of bringing payload to the Moon cost up to a million euros per kilogram; thus, by enhancing the lifetime of the rovers, the company helps to save hundreds of millions.

Egita Poļanska, partner at the lead investor Outlast Fund, says that the company’s direction aligns with the fund’s strategic goals.

“Space energy tech has been stuck with certain limitations for decades, but we’re finally seeing the pieces come together for a real breakthrough – new materials, smarter power systems, and actual commercial demand for lunar operations. Deep Space Energy is building the infrastructure that will literally power the next chapter of space exploration and industry. As Europe ramps up its space ambitions, we need our own companies to lead in these foundational technologies. We’re thrilled to back this team and honestly pretty excited to have an actual moonshot in our portfolio, in the most literal sense possible,” she says.

Linas Sargautis has also participated in the round and joined the company’s leadership team as an advisor, emphasising that such investments put the Baltics in the spotlight as an emerging space hub.

“The Baltic region is increasingly recognised for its innovation in space technology, with Deep Space Energy serving as another strong example. By supporting Deep Space Energy, we are helping to establish a solid foundation for the future of space frontier exploration, such as lunar and deep-space missions, expanding humanity’s knowledge and footprint, while also contributing to European space defence capabilities,” Sargautis says.

“I am proud to support the company’s journey by strengthening the team’s connections with leading space systems integrators, as well as supporting the company’s expansion and contracting plans to build the necessary expertise at the subsystem integration level.”

Together, we are showcasing the incredible potential of waste and contributing to the nation’s Net Zero ambitions, setting a benchmark for sustainable transformation worldwide.”

Once operational, the project is expected to serve multiple markets, positioning Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for SAF and supporting the decarbonization of a sector that accounted for over 18 percent of the UAE’s GDP in 2023, according to IATA data. SAF has the potential to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80 percent compared with conventional jet fuel, according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates.

The project also represents a key step toward delivering on several strategic national priorities, including the UAE General Policy for SAF, Abu Dhabi’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy, the National Hydrogen Strategy, the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

By transforming waste into clean energy, the project will also contribute to Tadweer Group’s strategic ambition of diverting 80 percent of waste from Abu Dhabi landfills by 2030, and creating new value chains in waste management, green hydrogen, and renewable fuels.

Building on Masdar’s extensive experience in renewable energy and hydrogen, and Tadweer Group’s expertise in unlocking the value of waste through multiple local and international partnerships, the project will reinforce the UAE’s position as a pioneer in clean energy innovation. The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a global leader in the production of low-carbon fuels, creating synergies across renewable energy, waste valorization, and sustainable transport.

    • The project will generate more than $100 million in property taxes, landowner payments and local contributions
    • This is the company’s second wind project in Texas, bringing the company’s total clean energy generation in the state to 273 MW

HIDALGO, Texas, Nov. 15, 2025 – Terra-Gen, one of the largest independent, integrated renewable energy producers in the United States, jointly owned by Masdar and Igneo Infrastructure Partners, announced today the commissioning of the Monte Cristo I Windpower Project.

The 238.5-megawatt facility, located in Hidalgo County, Texas, will generate more than 850 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to powering approximately 81,000 homes a year. The facility’s capacity has been contracted to two corporate buyers through long-term power purchase agreements.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site marked the milestone, bringing together companies’ representatives, local officials, and members of the community.

“It is an honor to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of men and women who made the commissioning of the Monte Cristo wind project possible,” said John O’Connor, Chief Financial Officer for Terra-Gen. “This project underscores Terra-Gen’s commitment to expanding access to renewable energy across Texas and the U.S., strengthening regional grid reliability with clean, sustainable power, and investing in our local communities.”

Construction of the Monte Cristo I Windpower project created approximately 280 jobs at the peak of activities, with more than 490,000 hours worked without a lost-time incident during construction and transition to operations.

In addition, the project also enhanced the community through infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to more than 11 miles of Texas Department of Transportation roads and 25 miles of county roads.

Beyond the construction phase, the facility will continue to deliver significant long-term economic benefits to the region, including more than $100 million in property taxes, landowner payments and other local contributions during the project’s life.

“We welcome Terra-Gen’s continued investment in Hidalgo County,” said Richard F. Cortez, Hidalgo County Judge. “This development represents more than clean, renewable energy, it’s an investment in our people and our long-term economic growth. By creating high-quality jobs, generating millions in local spending, and supporting essential public services, projects like this help us develop and attract human capital while positioning Hidalgo County as a leader in sustainable progress.”

Monte Cristo I Windpower is Terra-Gen’s second wind project in Texas. Together with the Texas Big Spring wind facility, the company’s clean energy generation in the state now totals 273 MW. Phase 2 of Monte Cristo Windpower has also been permitted and development activities for the project are ongoing.

Monte Cristo I Windpower is the first project to be completed since Masdar acquired a 50 percent stake in Terra-Gen in 2024. This acquisition underscores Masdar’s long-term commitment to investing in and supporting the U.S. energy transformation, and the strategic importance of the market in the company’s broader global portfolio.
