The 11th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) officially opened today at the Dubai World Trade Centre under the theme “Innovating for Impact: Accelerating the Future of the Green Economy.” The two-day summit, organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), runs until 2 October 2025.

The opening plenary, “Green Technology for Resilience: Innovations in Smart Climate Solutions,” featured global sustainability leaders including Saeed Al Abbar (AESG), Stwart Peña Feliz (MacroCycle Technologies), and Seneca Cottom (Alshaya Group). Speakers underlined that climate-related damages cost the global economy more than $320 billion in 2024, stressing that the biggest challenge is integration—aligning capital, policy, and innovation to accelerate deployment of sustainable projects.

Discussions highlighted the GCC’s leadership, particularly Dubai’s large-scale sustainable urban development. Speakers urged businesses to pilot new models, embed sustainability into products and codes, and empower consumers through education, incentives, and recycling.

A key presentation by WGEO addressed “Unpacking WGEO Participation at COP30,” underscoring its role ahead of the 2025 climate summit in Belém, Brazil. The session emphasised the UAE’s leadership in resilience, climate finance, and bankable green projects aligned with the UAE Consensus and the Just Transition Work Programme.

During the opening, bestselling author and food sustainability advocate Michael Pollan warned that agriculture contributes up to 50% of global emissions, linking food systems to deforestation, methane, and fertiliser use. He argued for regenerative agriculture—reduced tillage, cover cropping, and crop diversity—as a solution to restore soil carbon and mitigate climate change. Pollan also hosted a session “Fireside Chat with Michael Pollan,” where he stressed the need to transform food systems away from fossil-fuel-intensive, wasteful practices.

The morning also included a high-level panel marking 10 Years of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with leaders from ACWA Power, Masdar, Shanghai Electric, and Deloitte. Speakers emphasised visionary leadership, the transition to renewables, and the role of AI, green hydrogen, and storage solutions in ensuring affordable, reliable clean energy.

Youth engagement featured prominently in a keynote by HH Sheikha Dr Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, who urged harnessing social media as a powerful tool for raising climate awareness and mobilising youth.

In parallel sessions, experts explored themes including:

  • AI & Sustainability – with insights from Microsoft, Huawei, and Moro Hub on balancing AI’s energy demand with green infrastructure.
  • Health & Climate – highlighting the impact of heatwaves, food insecurity, and diseases on human health.
  • Climate Justice – addressing just transition, equity, and workforce adaptation.
  • Green Hydrogen – assessing the readiness of hydrogen to power clean mobility and heavy industries.
  • Water Security – presenting the UAE’s leadership in renewable-powered desalination, wastewater reuse, and smart irrigation.
  • Climate Governance – with global leaders debating reforms for COP and the multilateral system.

The summit continues tomorrow with sessions on green financing, carbon markets, food and water security, and will feature the Emirates Energy Award ceremony, TEDx talks, ministerial roundtables, and closing sessions.

DEWA and Siemens Energy drive global innovation with phase two of groundbreaking AI Plant Intelligent Controller https://ecomirrors.com/2025/10/01/dewa-and-siemens-energy-drive-global-innovation-with-phase-two-of-groundbreaking-ai-plant-intelligent-controller/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 19:07:42 +0000 http://ecomirrors.com/?p=308 Eco-Mirrors, Dubai UAE October 2025: Following the exceptional results achieved by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in collaboration with Siemens Energy, in developing and implementing the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) Plant Intelligent Controller, the two sides have signed a new agreement to implement the second phase of the project in M-Station Power Blocks 20 & 30 at the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Complex, the largest power plant in the UAE. The first phase of the project achieved significant results, including a 2.2% improvement in efficiency and fuel savings, in addition to a reduction of 35,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year for each power block.

In the presence of HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, the agreement was signed by Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of DEWA’s Generation Division (Power & Water), and Waheed Abbasi, Senior Vice President at Siemens Energy Gas Services, Middle East & North Africa, and Europe. Officials from DEWA and Siemens Energy were present. The agreement was signed during the 27th edition of the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX), which DEWA is organising from 30 September until 2 October 2025.

Al Tayer said: “We work in line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. We continue our efforts to consolidate sustainability and leverage the full potential of AI to enhance power and water infrastructure. Our aim is to make DEWA the world’s first AI-native utility and reinforce Dubai’s position as one of the world’s most future-ready cities. This world-first achievement of operating an AI Plant Intelligent Controller, developed by DEWA’s team led by Emirati specialists in collaboration with the Siemens Energy team, adds to our long history of innovation to improve operational performance, achieve significant fuel and cost savings and reduce emissions to contribute to reaching net zero by 2050.”

Abbasi said: “This project reflects our commitment to support our partners’ vision for a sustainable future. AI is not just a tool but a catalyst for digital transformation in the energy sector – helping to design and deliver road maps that accelerate the transition to cleaner, more reliable power. By embedding AI into the heart of the energy transition, we are enabling our partners to turn ambition into action and drive meaningful progress toward a net-zero future.”

Lootah said: “The mutual co-operation between DEWA and Siemens Energy throughout the years led to exceptional results in improving operational efficiency and the reduction of emissions by utilising AI and machine learning.” He also stressed that these technologies will continue to play a vital role in further improving business operational efficiency in many years to come. The Plant Intelligent Controller uses AI and digital twin-based closed-loop controllers to enhance the ability of power plants to adapt to changing grid requirements, ensuring optimal performance throughout the year while reducing fuel consumption and improving efficiency.
